Passionate fans, a great arena and a supporting community base led the San Jose Sharks to choose Worcester as the home town for its AHL team.

Sharks bring pro hockey back to Worcester

This winter will be hot at the DCU Center as the Worcester Sharks take to the ice! Worcester’s own professional hockey team makes its home ice American Hockey League debut on Saturday, October 14th at 7pm. The excitement of professional hockey’s return to Central Massachusetts can be felt throughout the region and certainly in the DCU Center hallways.

"We can’t wait to get the season started," says Worcester Sharks President Michael T. Lehr. "We’re excited about having a great inaugural campaign that hopefully starts with a sold-out show on the 14th!"

The Worcester Sharks are the primary affiliate of the NHL’s San Jose Sharks (does Joe Thornton ring a bell?). The team will be playing 40 home games between October and April as part of an 80-game regular season. The AHL is considered the second best professional hockey league in the world, supplying more than 80 percent of the players used on NHL rosters. Many insiders say, "it’s a league about hope and future." The same applies to the Sharks’ approach to their new home. The team has signed a 10-year lease to play at the DCU Center. Enhancing the "fastest sport on two feet" will be a new curtaining system at the DCU Center created for a more intimate atmosphere of approximately 6,800 fans.

"We came here for a reason," says Lehr. "We saw the passionate fans and felt the embrace of a welcoming corporate community. We believe in this area and are dedicated to becoming an integral fabric of Central Massachusetts." With the Sharks playing 40 home games at the DCU Center, including more than 30 of those on weekend nights, downtown Worcester is sure to prosper.

Lehr says Central Massachusetts will be treated to an organization focused on family-affordable fun while providing unique and powerful partnerships for local companies. "It’s about forming mutually beneficial partnerships," explains Lehr. "Our corporate programs are flexible and customized to meet the company’s objectives."

In addition to the traditional corporate marketing opportunities like dasher board signage, season tickets and in-ice logos, all 80 regular season Sharks games will be broadcasted on the radio at WTAG 580-AM and select games will air on Charter WCTR3.

The Sharks will also offer events that bring their partners "into-the-community" with the team. As an example, Lehr cites "Skate with the Sharks." The program features a Sharks public practice at a local youth hockey arena. Fans are invited to watch the pros practice, and afterward everyone can strap on their skates and hit the ice with the players. The entire event is free and all kids 12-and-under in attendance receive a FREE ticket to a future Sharks home game. Lehr says to look for three or four of the "Skate with the Sharks" events during the regular season.

The Sharks are also attracting fans with a flexible ticket menu that includes full season tickets, "flex" mini-packs, and the recently unveiled "Hat Trick" 3-Game ticket plan that guarantees a seat for Opening Night. With an option for fundraising and/or charity support, many organizations have already bought tickets and donated them to the many worthwhile community programs around the area.
