Worcester seeks to ease startup cost for businesses

WikiCommons Worcester City Councilors will discuss new sewer regulations Tuesday.

The City of Worcester is exploring changes to its regulations that would ease the costs for businesses with heavy water uses.

The City Council will discuss potential new regulations at their meeting Tuesday that, according to a letter from City Manager Edward Augustus, could reduce the fees for businesses with intense water use.

The recommendations include allowing property owners to finance any portion of a fee over $10,000 for up to eight years, and change the threshold requiring property owners to pay a capacity fee for each new gallon per day over the previously permitted discharge of existing facilities from 500 gallons to 1,500 per day, according to Augustus’ letter submitted to the City Council.

“In line with our economic development strategies, this will provide additional incentive to encourage adaptive reuse and rehabilitation of existing underutilized or abandoned properties,” Augustus wrote.

The City Council will discuss the issues at their Tuesday, April 5 meeting.
