A Scituate, R.I., man has been arrested for allegedly stealing $370,000 from Venerini Academy in Worcester in a fraudulent fundraising scheme, state Attorney General Martha Coakley said.
Coakley’s office alleges that Michael Hlady, a professional fundraiser, misled the Catholic school into believing that an anonymous donor would contribute millions of dollars the school.
Hlady then collected $370,000 in payments related to the fundraising but the donor is alleged to be fake.
Under the belief there would be a major donation, the school undertook a $3 million expansion project.
