Worcester recovery house completes renovations

The Channing House, a Worcester recovery facility, has undergone extensive interior and exterior renovations.
The Channing House, a recovery facility in Worcester, has completed an array of renovations including new flooring and walls and a conversion of a garage into an exercise room.
The facility at 21 Catherine St. helps roughly 50 men annually recover from addiction.
Renovations to the home, which was built in 1845, included a replacement of outdoor columns, a reinforced foundation, new siding, ceilings and lighting, and a new energy-efficient heating system. Efficient windows were installed, and bathrooms were upgraded.
The facility is run by Advocates, a Framingham agency providing services for a broad range of needs including addiction, psychiatric therapy, elder services and autism. Advocates runs Linda Fay Griffin House, a similar facility for women in Worcester.
The Channing House has a 35-percent graduation rate, compared to a 20-percent national average, and in the past year has seen 95 percent of its residents leave the program for sober housing or to return home, according to Advocates. All who completed the program last year have income on which to live, including 70 percent who are working and 15 percent who are enrolled in school.
Advocates did not disclose the total cost for renovations. Funding was provided by The Fletcher Foundation, Reliant Foundation, Stoddard Charitable Trust, Hoche Schofield Foundation, Webster Five Foundation, Albert W. Rice Foundation, and George F. and Sybil H. Fuller Foundation.
