Worcester receives perfect score for LGBTQ equality

The city of Worcester has received a perfect score of 100 from the annual Municipal Equality Index (MEI).

The increase places Worcester at the top for cities in Massachusetts, along with Boston, Cambridge, Provincetown, and Salem. Worcester’s nearby rival Providence also received a perfect score.

The score is a measure of how inclusive municipal laws, policies, and services are of the LGBTQ people who live and work there, according to the Human Rights Campaign that releases the scores. Cities are rated based on non-discrimination laws, the municipality as an employer, municipal services, law enforcement and the city leadership’s public position on equality, according to the organization.

Correction: A previous version of this story stated that the city received a score of 55 last year. That is incorrect. The number was 100 last year.
