A newly released list of the best places to retire placed Worcester on the undesirable end of the list as the second worst place to retire in the United States, falling behind cities such as Detroit and Anchorage.
The list from finance website Wallethub.com factored in data from the cost of living to the percentage of elderly people and put them in the categories of access to health care, affordability, available activities and quality of life. Worcester fell short in every category, being ranked 120th in the nation or lower in every category on a list of 150 cities.
The idea for the study was to find out not only where a dollar could be stretched best in retirement, but where it could be enjoyed. Unsurprisingly, the highest ranked retirement locations were Orlando and Tampa Florida in first and second. However, Sioux Falls, South Dakota made the list at fifth while Minneapolis, Minnesota was ranked ninth, proving that cold weather states could make it to the top of the heap.
Worcester residents will likely be pleased to note that the one city it did manage to beat is ongoing rival Providence, which fell behind Worcester due to poor scores for affordability and health care. Boston, the only other New England city to make the list, was ranked 92nd.
