Worcester railroad firms fined $20K by MassDEP

Two railroad companies have been fined $20,000 by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection for violations at a Millbrook Street train facility in Worcester.

According to the agency, Pan Am Railways and Boston & Maine Corp. admitted  they failed to limit residential use of the property as required in a previous agreement addressing the historic release of oil and hazardous material at the site.

State inspectors observed transient residential activity at the site. The companies also failed to correct errors noted in the agreement.

The firms have agreed to conduct remedial actions and reach a permanent cleanup solution not solely relying on limitation of site activities.
