Worcester pushes off ban on single-use plastic bags until September

An ordinance banning single-use plastic bags in Worcester will not go into effect until at least Sept. 1, City Manager Edward Augustus Jr. announced on Monday.

The ordinance, which was originally set to take effect on April 1, was pushed forward two months because of the coronavirus pandemic, according to a press release from the city. Monday’s announcement marks another two-month delay.

Retailers will be allowed to continue using single-use plastic bags until Sept. 1, unless the date is extended again.

“My order will allow retailers additional time to continue using their current supply of single-use plastic bags as they transition to more environmentally-friendly alternatives,” Augustus said in a statement.
