The Worcester Public Library Foundation has launched a $4.1-million capital campaign to support a nearly $13-million renovation of Worcester Public Library.

The foundation has already raised $3.3 million from local foundations, individuals and organizations, but is $800,000 short.

The planned renovation will include a new entrance off of Franklin Street facing Worcester Common, enclosure of the portico along Salem Street and a new children’s room on the third floor.

The new children’s area will feature a Polar Park-themed area in a nod to the $101-million stadium construction project, slated to begin this summer, for the new home of the Pawtucket Red Sox.

According to the foundation’s website, the last renovation of the 147,000-square-foot library was in 2001. It was built in 1960.
