Worcester, nonprofits partner to help hurricane victims

Worcester Mayor Joe Petty, the city and local nonprofits are working to help hurricane evacuees settle in the city.
The City of Worcester is partnering with nonprofit organizations to help facilitate the resettlement of evacuees fleeing the destruction left behind by hurricanes Maria and Irma.
Local groups Centro, Inc and Amor Para Puerto Rico are working with the city, the latter of which was formed just for this cause.
Centro, Inc. is located on Sycamore Street in Worcester, is describes itself on its website as the largest minority-led, community-based, multiservice, multicultural, multilingual, nonprofit organization in Central Massachusetts.”
Already, Worcester Public Schools have received 113 new students as a result of the resettlements, according to a press release from the city Thursday.
In total, the two storms killed nearly 200 people and caused more than $100 billion in damage to Caribbean islands.
"We are committed to working with our community and state partners to make sure that the people of Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Island are cared for and are receiving the services they deserve," said Mayor Joseph Petty. "We will not back down from our commitment to our fellow Americans.”
