Worcester moves toward multi-space parking meters, other improvements

The City of Worcester is implementing a multi-phased parking improvement plan aimed at making parking easier, beginning with the Canal District, the City announced Monday.

The plan begins on Tuesday, when Worcester will begin installing multi-space parking meters, similar to those found in Boston. They will replace existing single-space meters and, the City said, make parking more user-friendly. Those replacements will begin in the Canal District and later be expanded to the rest of the city.

At the same time, City officials are submitting a parking management proposal to the City Council, suggesting changes to local parking ordinances. That proposal will be submitted for the March 30 City Council meeting and will include plans to implement a pay-by-phone parking app — also common in Boston — as well as a new parking permit system and a change to pay-by-plate parking options.

The City additionally plans to release a Polar Park baseball stadium parking plan in early April, detailing available lots, garages and other parking options for game day and events.

The new parking meters, as well as the pay-by-phone app will not go live until the end of April.
