Worcester Lifts Water Boil Advisory

Worcester's water system is almost back to normal, after Monday's rupture of a 30-inch main at Chandler and May streets disrupted water service for more than 12 hours throughout the city and in several spots in surrounding communities.

Just after Noon today, the state Department of Environmental Protection lifted the city's advisory to boil water. Businesses and residents in Worcester can now use the tap water for drinking, cooking, doing laundry, and for other general uses.

"We thank you for your patience," read a post on the city's Facebook page.

In a statement Tuesday night, city officials said the system is nearly back to normal pressures. City officials pointed out that the water is not contaminated.

The break in the water main also caused disruption of the supply to the Elm Hill Water District in Auburn, Century Drive corporate park and the Worcester County Jail and House of Correction in West Boylston, and the Millbury Industrial Park. The city said Holden is utilizing its own water sources and has not been affected, while the Woodland Water District in Auburn was supplied by the Auburn Water District and was also unaffected. The town of Paxton ceased pumping from the city, isolated its system and is working from water held in its storage tank, thus avoiding impacts from the break as well.

Day and evening classes at Worcester State University, adjacent to the site of the break, will resume Thursday after having been canceled for two straight days. Only one classroom in the school's Ghosh Science and Science and Technology Building - the only campus structure impacted - will not be in use due to cleanup work, said WSU President Barry Maloney. Classes scheduled for that room will be held elsewhere. According to a statement from the school, state building and elevator inspectors have cleared the buildings and campus for use.
