The City of Worcester has launched an expedited outdoor dining expansion application process for restaurant owners as part of an executive order signed by City Manager Edward Augustus, the city announced on Wednesday.
The order comes just days before Gov. Charlie Baker is expected to announce Phase 2 of his reopening plan, following a more than two-month economic shutdown meant to deter the spread of the coronavirus. Indoor dining will continue to be banned under the second phase.
Under the changes in Worcester, the local $100 application fee is being waived, a nod to economic hardships faced by restaurant owners during the shutdown. The $156 fee for sidewalk obstruction permits to allow sidewalk seating is also being waived, according to the announcement.
In an effort to expedite the application process, the License Commission will review applications three times a week.
Restaurants will be allowed to apply for table dining on sidewalks in front of their business, parking lots and other suitable outdoor areas, according to the announcement.
