The unemployment rate for Worcester fell to 6.8 percent in November, a drop of 0.5 percent from October and slightly below the statewide rate, the federal government said today.
The rate showed an improving job market in the Worcester area over the last year. In November 2010, the rate was 8.6 percent.
The employment situation also improved in Northern Worcester County, according to the data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The unemployment rate in the Leominster-Fitchburg-Gardner area fell to 8.5 percent in November, down from 9.1 percent in October and 10.4 percent in November 2010.
The jobless rate in Framingham, which is part of the Boston region, was 4.7 percent, which the government said was the lowest rate of any geographic division of the 372 metropolitan areas it measures.
However, the government numbers cited slight month-to-month drops in the civilian labor force in both areas. The workforce in Worcester fell by about 1,000 to an estimated 298,600. In the Leominster-Fitchburg-Gardner area, the number fell by 100, to 72,800.
The bureau said unemployment rates were lower in 351 of the 372 metropolitan areas. Of the remaining 21, the rates were higher in 16 and unchanged in five.
