Worcester has found a buyer for the former Worcester County Courthouse — and sees enough significance in the step the city is holding a ceremonial deed signing event.
City Hall has scheduled a public event Thursday at 12:15 p.m. in the Levi Lincoln Chamber, where Boston developer Trinity Financial will sign paperwork making their purchase of the property official.
As the city stressed in an announcement of the event, the vacant property on Lincoln Square will become taxable land for the first time in 174 years.
The $1.3-million sale of the courthouse, which has been previously announced, will pave the way for a $53-million project bringing 114 apartment units and retail space. The courthouse building itself, including a more modern addition at the rear of the site, will be renovated.
This is the second go-around for a planned redevelopment of the site, which has been vacant since its replacement was built a few blocks south on Main Street a decade ago. Brady Sullivan Properties, a New Hampshire firm that bought the property from the city in 2015 for $1.2 million, backed out a year ago this month.
Trinity Financial has said it plans to start construction in the fall of 2018 and to finish work by the summer of 2020.
