Worcester Historical Museum receives $129K humanities grant, seeks to double it

The National Endowment for the Humanities has awarded the Worcester historical Museum a $129,030 grant from its Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act fund,  and the museum is asking the community to help double it, it announced on Thursday.

“The WHM Board proposes we challenge ourselves to raise a similar amount, an additional $120,000, to help secure Worcester’s history now and for the future,” said Gail Ciborowski Ferreira, museum board president, in a statement.

The NEH grant will provide six months of support and allow the museum to maintain five humanities positions, as well as create a short-term documentation position, according to a press release.

The museum said it will use the funds to support its efforts to record oral histories, document the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, digitize exhibits and develop virtual programming.

The Worcester Historical Museum was one of 317 cultural organizations to receive funding from the NEH, out of a reported 2,300 applicants.
