Worcester hiring outlook weak for 2016

Expected hiring in Worcester for 2016 has been found to be among the weakest in the nation, according to a survey of employers.

The international survey by ManpowerGroup found while hiring remains stable, Worcester employers are expecting to hire at a moderate pace through the first quarter. Among those surveyed, 12 percent plan to hire more employees from January through March. However, that number is offset by the 8 percent planning to reduce payrolls, while 78 percent of employers expect to maintain current staff levels and 2 percent indicate they are not sure of their hiring plans.

The Net Employment Outlook, a combination of all these figures, is 4 percent for Worcester in the first quarter, compared to 15 percent for the same quarter in the previous year. This is also a weaker hiring pace than the fourth quarter of 2015, which had an employment outlook of 10 percent.

Of the more than 11,000 employers surveyed in the United States, 20 percent expect to add to their workforces, and 6 percent expect a decline in their payrolls during the first quarter, according to ManpowerGroup.
