Worcester and Framingham are among 11 Massachusetts cities and towns that will receive payments for damages and restitution from Walmart and Target after the corporations allegedly overcharged public agencies for prescription drugs through the worker's compensation program.
Walmart will pay a total of $207,000 to the affected municipalities, while Target will pay $25,000, according to a press release issued Tuesday by Attorney General Martha Coakley's office. The corporations agreed to the payments in settlements with Coakley's office.
Other cities and towns to receive payments include Amherst, Boston, Concord, Everett, Fall River, Hingham, Lowell, Plymouth and Springfield.
The settlements were reached in Suffolk Superior Court on July 2, according to the release. Payments include double damages for violations of the state's False Claims Act, as well as restitution for the alleged overcharges. The two chains are also required to implement new procedures to protect against future overcharges.
The settlements with Walmart and Target are part of a larger investigation by Coakley into Massachusetts entities that hold pharmacy licenses. Her office has recovered $8 million from various retailers, including Shaw's Supermarket and Stop & Shop, according to the release.
