Foreclosure petitions in Worcester County increased by just over one percent in March, according to new statewide data from the Warren Group released Tuesday.
Petitions fell by 6 percent in the city of Worcester, and by 30 percent in Fitchburg. In Middlesex County, foreclosure petitions increased by 23 percent.
March was the first month since September of 2016 where foreclosure petitions increased statewide. Petitions were up 5.8 percent in March over the same month last year.
Foreclosure petitions are the first step in the foreclosure process, when lenders file a notice of intention to foreclose with the Land Court.
Foreclosure auctions were down nearly 8 percent in Worcester County, and foreclosure deeds, which represent completed foreclosures, also dropped by 13 percent. Auctions also fell by 23 percent in Middlesex County, and deeds fell by nearly 37 percent. Statewide, auctions were down 13.1 percent and deeds increased by almost a full percentage point.
