State public health officials on Monday awarded a $400,000 grant to the Boston Public Health Commission and a series of $100,000 grants to other communities with the goal of expanding substance abuse prevention services and programs.
As Massachusetts copes with the damage caused by opiate addiction, the state outlined competitive Substance Abuse Prevention Collaborative grant recipients under a new Bureau of Substance Abuse Services program.
Cities receiving $100,000 grants include Brockton, Fitchburg, Gardner, Gloucester, Lynn, Melrose, New Bedford, Peabody, Somerville, Springfield, and Worcester. Towns that received $100,000 grants include Hudson, Needham, Stoughton and Tewksbury.
The remaining $100,000 grants went to the County of Barnstable - Fire Training Academy; Northern Berkshire Community Coalition; Martha's Vineyard; Stanley Street Treatment and Resources in Fall River; Franklin Regional Council of Governments; the Collaborative for Educational Services in Hampshire County; Family Services of Merrimack Valley; High Point Treatment Center in the Plymouth area; Bay State Community Services in the Quincy area, and Wayside Youth and Family Support Network.
