A $1 million U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) grant has been awarded to the Unity Power Alliance (UPA), a partnership between Worcester's ThermoEnergy and an Italian company, for the development of clean coal energy technology.
ThermoEnergy, a diversified technologies company specializing in power generation in wastewater recovery, will use the money to continue research and development on a patented pressurized oxy-combustion technology for the production of clean power from coal. The technology was developed by ITEA spa, an Italian energy technology firm, according to a statement by ThermoEnergy.
The goal of the technology is to burn coal at high pressure, in purified oxygen, rather than normal air. This allows power plants to be more efficient and capture pollutants before they're released into the atmosphere, the statement said.
The UPA grant is one of eight awarded by the DOE. All projects are designed to support development of "clean coal" technologies.
