Worcester Drug Company Gets Girlier Name

A Worcester-based pharmaceutical company developing a topical estrogen product has now got a new name that reflects its focus on women’s health.

Orcas Therapeutics Inc. is now Hygeia Therapeutics Inc., named for the Greek goddess of health.

The company has also extended a licensing deal with Yale University for the new product, making the license worldwide and exclusive to Hygeia. The synthetic estrogen is intended to treat vaginal wall atrophy, skin thinning and wrinkling. According to the company, animal tests suggest it will not have the systemic effects found with many existing oral and topical estrogen products.
