Alpinax Drone Services of Worcester said Thursday it has received FAA clearance to fly within eight miles of Logan International Airport in Boston.
Alpinax called the step rare because of the confined and congested airspace around Logan. It is one of the first legal operators in the area to get such clearance, it said.
The area around Logan is otherwise off-limits to unmanned aircraft, Alpinax said.
Nassim Aoude, the company's chief executive officer, called the Logan clearance a step toward integrating drones into the economy.
Alpinax, created in 2014, uses cameras, thermal imaging sensors and lasers for conducting land surveys and other equipment attached to drones. It provides services to construction companies, surveying crews, or other firms doing mining or inspection work of hard-to-reach equipment such as wind turbines or power lines.
