Worcester County wage, employment growth trail state, national averages

Wage and employment growth in Worcester County rose in the second quarter but trailed state and national averages, according to new Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

Weekly wages rose by 2.9 percent to an average of $1,039. That tied for fifth out of the nine largest Massachusetts counties that were measured.

Middlesex County was up 3.4 percent to a median weekly wage of $1,571.

Statewide, weekly wages rose by 3.5 percent. Nationally, they were up 3.4 percent.

The average weekly wage in Massachusetts of $1,322 was the highest of any state.

Employment was also up in Worcester County in the second quarter, but that growth also failed to keep up with broader averages.

In Worcester County, employment was up 0.7 percent. In Middlesex County, it rose by 1.7 percent.

Across Massachusetts, employment grew by 1.0 percent. Nationally, it was up 1.5 percent.
