Worcester County surpasses 500 coronavirus deaths

Worcester County on Thursday recorded the highest daily change in coronavirus deaths and surpassed 500 fatalities from the disease, with 35 new deaths and 314 new cases, reversing what had been an encouraging downward trend.

The 35 deaths reported Thursday were the highest so far, coming a day after the county tallied 30 deaths. Already, 259 deaths have been recorded in Worcester County in May alone.

The high increase of deaths in Worcester County brought the total to 524. Statewide, there were 167 new deaths, and 5,482 overall, according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

The new cases in Worcester County are a 4% increase from Wednesday bringing the total to 8,555. Throughout Massachusetts, new cases numbered 1,685, up 2%, for a total of 82,182.

The Department of Public Health also reports 14,329 newly administered coronavirus tests Thursday and 424,361 overall.

The City of Worcester reports 124 new cases, up 4%, bringing the total to 3,206. The DCU Center field hospital in the city has 10 coronavirus patients, 69 more are at the Beaumont Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center, and eight at a state-run care center at the Quality Inn.

As of Thursday, UMass Memorial Health Care and Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester reported a slight drop in coronavirus cases with 238 total, and 94 in intensive care. On Tuesday the hospitals had 261 cases overall, and 101 in intensive care. Overall, the hospitals have had a total of 201 coronavirus deaths, and 268 employees have tested positive.

MetroWest Medical Center in Natick and Framingham report 71 confirmed and suspected cases, and Milford Regional Medical Center report 27 according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. Between the hospitals, there are a total of 20 in the ICU. Other Central Massachusetts hospitals such as Harrington Hospital, Heywood Hospital, and Health Alliance in Leominster report 45 confirmed or suspected cases, and 12 in intensive care.

Nationally, cases have surpassed 1.4 million, and there are more than 85,000 deaths according to Johns Hopkins University in Maryland. Globally, cases have surpassed 301,000 deaths and 4.4 million cases.
