Worcester County, state see major case decreases Monday

Coronavirus cases in Worcester County and Massachusetts had their lowest single-day case totals in more than a month on Monday, according to Massachusetts Department of Public Health data.

Worcester County cases rose by 75, the lowest one-day increase since April 5, hitting 78,462 total cases. Massachusetts saw 669 new cases, its lowest since March 26, hitting a total of 7,818.

Despite the low numbers, local cases still remain very high.

The Worcester metropolitan area ranks 13th highest nationally for the most deaths per-capita in the last two weeks, according to the New York Times. The death toll in Worcester County continues to climb with 13 new fatalities Monday making the total 457. In the beginning of May the death toll in the county was at 265, and grew largely throughout the past few weeks.

Statewide, the death toll increased by 129 with a total of 5,108. Massachusetts has the third most cases and deaths nationally, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The city of Worcester saw dwindling coronavirus cases Monday with 47 new cases, which is the lowest one-day increase since April 21. There have been a total of 2,971 coronavirus cases in the city. 

UMass Memorial Health Care and Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester reported 269 total cases, an eight-person increase since Saturday, with a total of 102 in intensive care. There have been seven new deaths, bringing the hospitals' total death tally to 175, and 247 employees have tested positive. 

MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham and Natick report 60 suspected and confirmed cases, and Milford Regional Medical Center reports 39 according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. 

Other Central Massachusetts hospitals such as Harrington Hospital, Heywood Hospital, and HealthAlliance in Leominster report 32 suspected and confirmed cases overall.

The Department of Public Health also reports 6,339 new coronavirus tests performed Monday with a total of 394,728.

Nationally, there are over 1.3 million coronavirus cases, and deaths have skyrocketed to above 80,000, according to Johns Hopkins University in Maryland. Globally, there are 4.1 million cases and almost 286,000 deaths.
