Worcester County shows encouraging coronavirus case drop

Worcester County has had fewer new coronavirus cases in the past week, showing a slight downward trend echoing throughout Massachusetts, which follows a period of worry among public officials when cases were on the rise again.

Worcester County had nine fatalities between Aug. 7 and Tuesday, the latest date with such data available, according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. New fatalities in the county bring the total death toll since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,007.

A seven-day average of new county cases Tuesday was 31, compared to a seven-day average of 46 on Aug. 2. Worcester County has had 13,686 cases to date through Tuesday.

Statewide, there were 1,833 new confirmed and probable cases reported between Aug. 7 and Tuesday. In all, the state has reported 113,517 confirmed coronavirus cases and 8,568 deaths.

The City of Worcester reported slightly declining numbers. The city had 70 new cases in the past week through Thursday, a drop from an 88-case week two weeks prior. The city now has had 5,647 cases in total.

UMass Memorial Health Care and Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester reported to DPH a total of 28 current inpatients and eight in intensive care. In total the hospitals have had 357 coronavirus-related deaths, and 392 employees have tested positive for the virus to date.

MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham and Natick reported five inpatients with one in the ICU, and HealthAlliance in Leominster reports three inpatients. 

Nationally, there are now more than 5.2 million coronavirus cases recorded with 167,092 fatalities, according to Johns Hopkins University in Maryland. Globally, there have been 20.7 million cases and roughly 752,893 deaths.
