Worcester County gained 279 biomanufacturing jobs between 2022 and 2023, despite a decline in jobs in the sector across all other counties in the state with a biomanufacturing presence.

This growth of 11.8% comes as counties to the east of Worcester saw declines in the total amount of biomanufacturing jobs. Norfolk, Essex, Middlesex, and Suffolk counties saw a combined loss of 556 jobs in the sector between 2022 and 2023, according to the 2024 Industry Snapshot released by the Cambridge-based Massachusetts Biotechnology Council on Tuesday.

Suffolk County saw a 30.3% decline that saw it go from 884 jobs in 2022 to 616 in 2023, the largest decrease among the counties surveyed.

Despite the decline in biomanufacturing jobs, Massachusetts added 3,000 net new jobs in the biopharma industry in 2023. Massachusetts accounts for 15.2% of the nation’s drug development pipeline, up from 14.9% in 2022.

Worcester County’s biomanufacturing sector is looking to capitalize on recent success, as Worcester incubator Massachusetts Biomedical Initiatives released a report in July calling for the region to become a global leader in the field by building out the area’s talent capacity and encouraging more cooperation between state and local leaders, among other proposals.

As the state’s life science sector deals with slower growth and higher lab vacancies, industry leaders are awaiting the passage of a $1 billion injection of funds into the sector from the state’s economic development bill.
