Worcester County woodland property owners can now get paid to maintain their forests.
The Family Forest Carbon Program, created by two nonprofits: the American Forest Foundation of Washington, D.C. and The Nature Conservancy of Virginia, is opening enrollment to rural woodland property owners in Worcester County as well as Berkshire, Franklin, Hampden, and Hampshire counties, according to a Wednesday announcement.
The program provides annual payments to individual and family owners of 30 to 3,000 acres of woodland to commit to implement approved forest practices on their land for 20 years. The organization then sells carbon credits to companies.
The program has been open for enrollment in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and parts of Maryland since 2020. It is opening in Vermont and eastern New York. It plans to expand into the upper Midwest and South in the future.
More information is available on the program’s website.
