Worcester County records most new coronavirus cases in a single day on Thursday, with 165

Worcester County had a reported 165 new coronavirus cases and a 31st death in new data released Thursday by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

The new cases bring the county's total to 1,461. The 165 new cases, a rise of 13%, are the most in a single day in Worcester County yet.

Statewide, cases hit 18,941, an increase of 13% or 2,151 cases. That's also a new single-day high. The state also recorded 70 new deaths, hitting a total of 503.

The 31st Worcester County death was a man in his 90s. Most deaths have been in cases where victims have pre-existing conditions, but the Department of Public Health said it was unknown whether the man had those conditions.

The state reported Thursday that nearly 95,000 tests have been done to gauge the spread of the pandemic. That's up nearly 7,500 from the day prior.

The city of Worcester has reported 482 cases as of Thursday, up from 440, including 44 in intensive care at either UMass Memorial Medical Center or Saint Vincent Hospital.

Across the country, cases have topped 450,000 and deaths are approaching 16,000, according to Johns Hopkins University in Maryland. Worldwide cases now total more than 1.5 million with more than 93,000 deaths.
