Worcester County COVID-19 death toll climbs to 312 over the weekend

Worcester County had a reported 34 new coronavirus deaths over the weekend, bringing the total so far to 312.

Total cases, according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, reached 6,288 in Worcester County on Sunday and 68,087 statewide. Those one-day increases were each up 3%.

Statewide deaths surpassed the latest milestone Sunday, with 158 new deaths bringing the total to 4,004. Worcester County is seventh among the state's 14 counties in number of coronavirus deaths, and eighth in rate per capita, according to the Department of Public Health, with 37 deaths per 100,000 people. Almost one-fourth of the state's deaths have been in Middlesex County, which stretches from MetroWest to Lowell to Cambridge.

Cases reached 2,386 in the city of Worcester Sunday, with increases of 107 Saturday and 89 Sunday. 

The hospital systems at Saint Vincent Hospital and UMass Memorial Health Care in Worcester had 269 total coronavirus inpatient cases, with 103 in intensive care. So far, 124 patients at the two systems have died of coronavirus, and 189 of their employees have tested positive.

The Walmart Supercenter store at 25 Tobias Boland Way, which was ordered closed last week after 23 workers tested positive, has also seen an increase in confirmed cases. That number rose to 81 Sunday.

Coronavirus tests conducted statewide rose by 15,562 Sunday to hit 314,646.

Coronavirus deaths worldwide were approaching the 250,000 mark Monday morning, with more than 3.5 million cases, according to Johns Hopkins University in Maryland. In the United States, cases stand at 1.16 million with nearly 68,000 deaths.
