Worcester County coronavirus deaths rose to 49 over weekend

The number of reported coronavirus deaths in Worcester County hit 49 on Sunday as the total number of countywide cases surpassed 2,000.

Cases continue to rise sharply across Massachusetts, too, according to the state Department of Public Health, with 25,475 cases reported Sunday, a one-day increase of 11%. The state has reported 756 deaths, including 70 on Sunday.

The city of Worcester has reported 686 cases as of Sunday, including 46 new cases. Saint Vincent Hospital and UMass Memorial Health Care in Worcester have a reported 184 combined inpatient cases, including 62 in intensive care. Those two hospital networks have reported a total of 27 coronavirus-related deaths and 97 cases of their own employees testing positive.

Newly reported Worcester County deaths over the weekend include 11 people, five of which were known to have pre-existing conditions. The victims were five women and a man in their 90s, a man and a woman in their 80s, two women in their 70s and a woman in her 50s.

Total Worcester County cases hit 2,032 on Sunday, a 12% increase from Saturday.

The Department of Public Health reported 7,954 new coronavirus tests for a total of 116,730.

Nationwide cases were approaching 558,000 Monday morning with more than 22,000 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University in Maryland. International cases were nearing 1.9 million, with 115,000 deaths.
