Worcester County had two more reported coronavirus cases Wednesday afternoon, bringing the total to 10, while the Massachusetts total jumped by 38 to 256.
Those latest numbers from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health come as testing for the virus is increasing. UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, for example, began a new screening center for referred patients Wednesday.
Massachusetts had 218 cases on Tuesday and 92 a week ago. Massachusetts had the sixth-highest number of cases among all states earlier in the day Wednesday, according to U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other sources compiled by The New York Times.
New York has the most cases with 2,382 and Washington the most deaths with 56, according to The Times.
In Massachusetts, Middlesex County has the most cases with 100, followed by 51 in Suffolk County and 45 in Norfolk County. A Boston conference by Cambridge biotech firm Biogen in February has been determined the cause of 97 of the cases, according to the Department of Health.
At least 27 patients across Massachusetts have needed to be hospitalized, the state said.
A state-run laboratory has conducted 1,743 tests through Wednesday, according to the Department of Public Health, while private labs, including LabCorp with 306 and Quest Diagnostics with 222.
UMass Memorial began screening on Wednesday patients who were referred and met several criteria, including experiencing symptoms and being exposed to someone who tested positive for coronavirus. The hospital is working to set up a similar testing station at Marlborough Hospital.
