Worcester County coronavirus cases hit 4,227 Friday, with 10 new deaths reported, according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

Statewide, cases jumped 6%, or 2,877, to surpass 50,000 cases for the first time. Cases now stand at 50,968, with Massachusetts trailing only New York and New Jersey nationally.

Worcester County cases jumped 11% in one-day, but many of those cases likely date to previous days. The Department of Public Health said Friday that a reporting error from a laboratory from Quest Diagnostics affected daily case numbers dating to April 13. Daily state case totals were adjusted retroactively, but not county-by-county cases.

In Worcester County, 10 news deaths were reported Friday, bringing the death toll to 166. Statewide, 196 new deaths were reported Friday, creating a total death toll of 2,556.

Within the city of Worcester, there are now a reported 1,618 positive coronavirus cases. This is a 5% increase from Thursday with 76 new cases.

The Department of Public Health also reported 20,137 new coronavirus tests performed. There have been 215,213 tests performed overall.

Saint Vincent Hospital and UMass Memorial Health Care in Worcester had 243 coronavirus cases Friday, with 93 in intensive care.

The DCU Center in Worcester reported having 81 patients testing positive for the coronavirus, with 63 being homeless.

Throughout the nation, the death toll has now surpassed 50,000 with 886,213 confirmed cases, according to Johns Hopkins University in Maryland. Globally, there have been almost 2.8 million confirmed cases, and more than 195,000 deaths.

CORRECTION: A previous version of this story wrongly attributed an adjustment in case totals made Friday by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to Friday's total specifically. The adjustments, due to a reporting error from a laboratory, affected daily statewide case numbers dating back to April 13. This story, and the accompanying charts, have been changed to reflect the state's new daily case total.
