On Tuesday, the Worcester City Council will discuss appointing Assistant City Manager Eric Batista as interim City Manager, filling in for Edward Augustus who announced Tuesday he will step down at the end of May.
If the council votes in favor of appointing Batista, they will convene in private executive session to discuss his contract, according to the City Council agenda. Batista would begin his interim role June 1 for a nine-month period.
Eric Batista was appointed assistant city manager in October 2021 and serves in the role alongside Assistant City Manager Nicole Valentine. He has worked for the city since 2012, beginning as a project manager.
Batista is also the director of urban innovation, and was appointed as interim chief diversity officer earlier in March after Chief Diversity Officer Stephanie Williams announced her resignation.
Naming an interim city manager will give the City Council time to search for a new permanent person, while still maintaining city leadership during the search process.
The last two city managers, Ed Augustus and Michael O’Brien, served as interim city managers before taking on the role permanently.
