Worcester Community Housing Resources, a not-for-profit aimed at preserving affordable housing in the city, has changed in leadership, naming Paul TonThat as the organization’s new executive director.

TonThat comes to his new role having most recently served in a very similar role, working as the executive director of Nuestra Comunidad Development Corp., a Roxbury-based not-for-profit working to enhance the holistic wellbeing of those underserved in the Boston neighborhood.

He began his nonprofit career at Boston-based Bay Cove Human Services in the 1990s where he established a bilingual, bicultural residential program for those of Asian descent unhoused and living with mental illnesses, according to a Monday press release from WCHR. He has since served in leadership roles at nonprofits including the Vietnamese American Initiative for Development in Boston, the National Network of Forest Practitioners in Ohio, and National Brain Tumor Society in Newton.

“Our work is about more than just building homes – it is about creating stronger communities throughout Worcester County. Paul TonThat has an impressive track record of mission driven leadership in the non-profit space, and his skills and experience will be a stellar addition to our team" Jim Hayes, WCHR board chair, said in the release.

TonThat replaces the organization’s previous executive director, Jennifer Schanck-Bolwell, who left the position in August to assume her current role as COO of nonprofit Crossroads Rhode Island, according to her LinkedIn profile.

TonThat graduated with his bachelor’s degree in economic-finance from Bentley University in Waltham and his master’s degree of divinity from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Hamilton.

"I am thrilled to join the Worcester Community Housing Resources team as executive director,” TonThat said in the release. "I look forward to the future, as WCHR expands our existing programs, implements creative solutions for new housing, and works alongside new and existing partners to ensure that everyone in Worcester has a place to call home.”

In 2023, WCHR generated $4.25 million in revenue and had $25.92 million in assets, according to nonprofit financial tracker GuideStar.
