Worcester Colleges Measure Up

Several Worcester colleges found their way onto the U.S. News and World Report list of best colleges for 2009, though with some slippage from last year.

The College of the Holy Cross ranked 35th among top liberal arts colleges, down from number 33 last year. Worcester Polytechnic Institute placed 71st on the "national university" list, where it was number 61 last year, while Clark University in Worcester rose to 80th from 91st. Clark also ranked 40th in best value among national universities, and WPI came in 50th on the same list. Holy Cross also got high marks for selectiveness, tying with three other colleges for 86th place in a measure of the lowest acceptance rates. Just 33 percent of Holy Cross applicants get in.

In the category of master's universities in the North, Assumption College in Worcester placed 30th, down from 28th last year. The magazine defines master's universities as institutions that offer undergraduate and some master's programs but few doctoral programs.
