Worcester Colleges Group Wins Federal Grants

The Colleges of Worcester Consortium, an alliance of the private and public colleges and universities in Central Massachusetts, have been awarded nearly $19 million in federal funds, U.S. Rep. James McGovern, D-Worcester, announced today.

The money will be split among three grants, most of it - $11.88 million - in partnership with the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education to help generate interest among middle school and high school students in college, and prepare them for post-secondary education. The grant is for seven years.

The consortium was also awarded $5.375 million over five years by the U.S. Department of Education, which allow the consortium to continue to provide higher education access services to predominantly low-income, first-generation adults.

Finally, the consortium was awarded $1.625 million over five years to support a federal program that serves 800 at-risk youths in three of the state's "highest-need" cities: Worcester, Springfield and New Bedford.

"These grants are a tangible recognition of the great work being done by the Colleges of Worcester Consortium," McGovern said. I believe that to get ready for the workforce of today and the future, we need to focus on education and job training."

"The higher education community here in Greater Worcester is committed to both the success of all students and to meeting our regional employers' future workforce needs," added Mark P. Bilotta, the consortium's CEO. "These funds and services will do just that."
