Worcester Colleges Group Hires New Leader

After announcing in March it would reorganize, the Colleges of Worcester Consortium (COWC) has hired Jeanine B. Went to serve as its executive director.

Went will lead the alliance of Worcester-area colleges and universities through a transformation designed to strengthen the government-funded programs COWC oversees that serve middle and high school students as well as low-income adults, according to COWC.

Went is currently director of new student orientation and support services at Johnson and Wales University in Providence, R.I., and will bring an "extensive background in fiscal oversight and strategic and creative planning of new programs and activities," to COWC, the organization said in a statement.

The new model includes the legal separation of the COWC's two divisions, effective June 1. The COWC will now consist of the consortium's member services organization representing its 12 member colleges and universities, and its offices will be based at Anna Maria College in Paxton.

A new nonprofit organization, Massachusetts Education and Career Opportunities Inc. (MassEdCO), was formed to administer the consortium's former higher education access services. Pamela Boisvert, longtime vice president for higher education access services at COWC, will serve as MassEdCO CEO as of July 1, the organization said.

The member services division, which will continue to operate as COWC, will begin operating under the new model under Went on July 1, COWC said.

A number of former management positions were eliminated under the reorganization, including the chief executive position formerly held by Mark Bilotta. Anna Maria College President, Jack Calareso, who serves as chairman of COWC's board of directors, said in March that Bilotta had done a "great job" but member schools did not require the same level of service under the new model.

Bilotta, who is the MassEdCO CEO until the end of June, said he will continue to serve as chairman of the board but will not be employed at either organization as of July 1.

Calareso said COWC's transition to a new model has been seamless.

"Bringing Jeanine on board was the last step in the process and we are excited about the opportunities for the new COWC under her leadership," Calareso said.
