The Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce has endorsed a new tax rate compromise as the City Council struggles to find middle ground and set a tax rate for the coming year.
The debate that has been ongoing since Nov. 10 is set to continue Tuesday. The chamber has now endorsed line 187, which translates to a tax rate of $21.05 for residents and $32.90 for businesses. This represents an increase to the median residential tax bill of $183 and $341 for the median business, according to the chamber.
Previously, the chamber had supported line 177, but according to the rules of the council any item voted in the negative cannot be reconsidered. This also holds true for Mayor Joe Petty's compromise of line 191, which the Chamber viewed as a compromise between their proposal and that of the residential community.
According to chamber President and CEO Tim Murray, the new compromise rate shares the tax burden equitably while continuing the momentum towards a single-tax rate.
