The Worcester Bravehearts will play their first game of the season on July 2, marking the beginning of the larger Futures Collegiate Baseball League 2020 season, the league announced on Monday.
The season will feature six teams and 39 games. It will conclude on Aug. 19.
The league had delayed the start of the season due to concerns about the coronavirus pandemic, and the teams ultimately decided not to cancel and instead use social distancing and extra cleaning measures. The Bravehearts, the league's defending champions, were among the few teams selected to plan the truncated schedule.
“Our team owners and operators put a tremendous amount of work into positioning our ballparks to open as safely as possible in order to provide fans with our unique brand of baseball and entertainment,” said League Commissioner Joe Paolucci, in a statement. “We’re excited to get going.”
The 2020 season is the 10th Futures League season, according to the announcement. The six teams on deck to play are the Worcester Bravehearts, Brockton Rox, North Shore Navigators and Westfield Starfires from Massachusetts, as well as the New Britain Bees in Connecticut and Nashua Silver Knights in New Hampshire.
The top two teams will play a best-of-three series to decide the league champion, after the regular season concludes. The game schedule is available online.
