Worcester Baseball Fans Pick Bravehearts As New Team Name

By a two-to-one margin, fans voted to name Worcester’s new baseball team the Bravehearts.

The new Futures Collegiate Baseball League franchise also announced that The Hanover Insurance Group has signed on as the team’s presenting sponsor and will retain naming rights for the stadium at Fitton Field at the College of the Holy Cross.

Bravehearts is intended as an homage Worcester’s emergency responders and military personnel, said team owner and local businessman John Creedon Jr. The name also alludes to Worcester’s location in the “heart of the commonwealth,” Creedon said.

Kevin Hunt of Charlton submitted the winning name, the team said. He will receive season tickets for life, a team jersey and cap, and the right to throw the first pitch on the home opener on June 5.

“We are humbled to name the team in honor of all those in Worcester who presently answer the call of duty to protect and serve, and especially as a tribute to Worcester’s fallen firefighters who demonstrated legendary bravery,” Creedon said. “The courage of these heroic people – past and present – defines and galvanizes our city.”
