The Worcester Arts Council has awarded $277,773 to fund local cultural projects, approximately $72,000 more than in 2022.

The organization, funded mainly by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, chose 58 projects and 8 artist fellows out of 157 applications, according to a Tuesday press release.

“We were able to distribute more grant funding into the community than ever before and are looking forward to the variety of projects planned for this year,” WAC Chair Jennifer Riley said in the press release. “It’s an honor to support so many projects and people who inspire us, challenge us, and connect us through their creativity and imagination.”

Grants were awarded to a variety of projects and artists, including the Worcester Art Museum which received $5,000 for its Southeast Asia Artist-in-Residency Program and the nonprofit Worcester Hip Hop Congress for its event 5-0-Break vol2 which also received $5,000. The first edition of that event was held in September 2021 at Mechanics Hall in Worcester.

Laura Marotta, a member of WBJ’s 40 under Forty class of 2018, received a $5,000 fellowship for her work as a visual artist. Local independent journalist Bill Shaner received a $3,000 fellowship.

The Worcester Arts Council is part of a network of 329 Local Cultural Councils under the Massachusetts Cultural Council. These LCCs serve all 351 cities and towns across the Commonwealth. Statewide, $5.5 million will be distributed by LCCs in 2023, according to the press release.
