Worcester Art Museum will remain closed until October

The Worcester Art Museum announced on Monday that it would not reopen to the public until early October, allowing for time to plan fall exhibitions and renovation projects.

Museums were allowed to open as soon as Monday under Phase 3 reopening guidelines announced just before the Fourth of July weekend.

In a press release, the Worcester Art Museum said the decision to postpone its reopening to the fall was made in conjunction with the museum’s Board of Trustees.

Among the projects that would continue during the continued closure is the rebuilding of the museum’s Lancaster entrance stairs, which began in Nov. 2019, per the announcement. The work paused in March when the coronavirus pandemic shut down the Mass. economy.

When the museum reopens, two exhibitions previously scheduled for this spring will also launch – The Kimono in Print: 300 Years of Japanese Design and Kimono Couture: The Beauty of Chiso, which will open on Oct. 3 and Nov. 7, respectively.

In the meantime, per the announcement, summer and fall studio art classes will transition to online formats.
