The Worcester Art Museum is demolishing and rebuilding its main entrance on Lancaster Street to make the plaza handicapped accessible.
Crews are knocking down the existing concrete stairs and will build new ones in their place, along with an elevator to provide handicapped accessibility to its Higgins Education Wing.
The work is necessary because the Lancaster Street plaza stairs, which had been crumbling in places, became unsafe and unsightly, the museum said. The work is expected to be complete by the spring, and until then, visitors are being directed to use an entrance on Salisbury Street or a temporary Lancaster Street entrance.
The work is being supported by the C. Jean & Myles McDonough Charitable Foundation in Worcester. In July, the foundation announced a $10-million gift to the museum, following a $4-million donation in 2015.
