The Worcester Art Museum has been given a $10-million donation, the largest in its history, the museum announced Sunday.

The contribution from the C. Jean & Myles McDonough Charitable Foundation follows a $4-million endowment gift from the foundation in 2015. It continues what the museum says is Jean McDonough's lifelong support of the museum with a gift targeting the museum's near-term needs and long-term financial health.

The gift far exceeds what the museum typically brings in for contributions over the course of a whole year: $5.5 million in 2016, the latest year available through public records, and $3.4 million in 2015. The museum lists $105 million in investments.

Matthias Waschek, the director of the museum whose formal title bears the C. Jean and Myles McDonough name, said in an announcement of the grant that the donation will benefit the community as well as the museum.

"It reflects Jean’s lifelong devotion to the museum, which she describes as her second home," Waschek said. "For years, she served as a forward-thinking trustee and as a docent extraordinaire, who introduced thousands of school children to the museum collection, and we are tremendously grateful for her past engagement."

The C. Jean & Myles McDonough Charitable Foundation is based in Worcester and last disclosed $4.4 million in charitable contributions in 2016.
