Worcester among lowest solar installation costs in state

A study conducted by Solar to the People found that Worcester County was among the most affordable areas in the state for residential solar installations.

The average cost of a home solar installation in Massachusetts during the first five months of 2015 was $20,180, or $2,776 per kilowatt. That was after rebates and incentives, which Solar to the People found saved purchasers of solar systems during the first five months of 2015 an average of 38 percent.

In a break-down of cost by region, Worcester County was among the lower costs per kilowatt hour in the state at $2,656. The figures from elsewhere in the state, all from the first five months of 2015, are: Cape Cod, $3,191 per kilowatt hour; the Berkshires, $2,849; the Boston area, $2,734; Springfield/Pioneer Valley, $2,710; and Franklin County, $2,652.

The study by the solar information website was conducted to provide transparency on costs and help residential customers decide whether to make the switch, according to a statement from Solar to the People. The website used data from the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center’s Commonwealth Solar II Rebate Program database for its findings.

The study also notes that one of the main Massachusetts rebates, Commonwealth Solar II – which reduced the price of solar by an average of 6.8 percent in the first part of 2015 -- is no longer available.
