Worcester airport to land new service

A new service is being added to Worcester Regional Airport, state officials confirmed Thursday.

Samantha Hooper, a media relations manager at MassPort, told WBJ an event at the airport is planned for next Tuesday at which a new service will be announced.

Hooper would not disclose if the service was a new airline or another flight with an existing airline, but Worcester County Sheriff Lew Evangelidis, who sits on the MassPort board, told WBJ a new airline would be flying out of Worcester.

He declined to name the airline or its destination, but called it a “nationally recognized” company.

A new airline would be the third to fly from Worcester. JetBlue currently offers flights to New York City and Orlando and Fort Lauderdale, Fla. In April, state and local officials announced American Airlines daily flights from Worcester to Philadelphia, which will begin in October.

Evangelidis said no announcements are imminent after Tuesday’s reveal, but did say MassPort and the airport are currently having discussions with other airlines.
