The Worcester Red Sox may be limited by state guidelines for how many fans they'll be able to have at Polar Park this season, but it's their own cap that's put a lid on how many full-year season tickets they can sell for their inaugural season.
The WooSox said Monday they've sold 2,158 full-year season tickets after capping such tickets to a little more than 20% of the stadium's capacity. The idea was to keep most seats available for people to buy for a single game at a time. Half-season plans, which cover 30 of the team's 60 scheduled home games, are still on sale without a cap.
Ultimately, how many fans make it to Polar Park this season could be out of the team's control. State pandemic guidelines starting March 22 keep capacity of sports venues to 12%, or 1,140 for Polar Park. The WooSox said they'll put single-game and group tickets for sale when more is known about pandemic-related capacity limits.
The WooSox, scheduled to play their first game in Worcester on May 11 after decades in Pawtucket, R.I., said they're one of only two teams in the top level of the minor leagues to put such a cap on season tickets, along with the Las Vegas Aviators, who opened their new ballpark in 2019.
The 2021 minor league baseball season is starting about a month late to allow parent baseball clubs to use their affiliates' facilities for extra training space. The WooSox are scheduled to play 120 games, down from a typical 142. Their 2020 season, which was set to be their last in Pawtucket, was canceled because of the pandemic.
