WooSox reserve Red Sox business name, but Worcester team name not yet chosen

The Pawtucket Red Sox have reserved the business entity of Worcester Red Sox Baseball Club LLC with the Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth’s office.

The name was requested on April 23 and the reservation expires on June 22, according to the office. The filing does not indicate what the Worcester team will be known as. The team has said that their official Massachusetts business entity will include some variation of “Worcester Red Sox,” but that the team name could very well be different.

Per state law, businesses can reserve a corporate name before filing an official business certificate.

When reached for comment Friday, the team said it has not yet made a decision on what name will appear on players' jerseys.

Earlier this year, the team trademarked three possible nicknames: the Worcesters, Ruby Legs and Wicked Worms, but no official decision on the team’s name has been made.

The Pawtucket Red Sox, relocating to Worcester for the 2021 season into a $101-million ballpark to be built by the city, have been soliciting input on possible team names for months and have not committed to keeping the Red Sox brand on its uniforms or ballpark.

WooSox, an unofficial nickname given to the team, has been trademarked by a Minor League Baseball lawyer.

The stadium will be known as Polar Park, named after the Worcester beverage company Polar Beverages, which has also trademarked the name.
